An art competition aiming to forge connections across generations is underway at OneCare’s Umina Park residential care home in Burnie – and more budding artists are encouraged to get on board.
As part of the ‘Portraits that Connect’ art competition, budding artists are matched with a Umina Park resident. Artists come in, meet and photograph their subject, and have eight weeks to complete their artworks, which will be showcased at a special exhibition at Burnie Library to celebrate Seniors Month.
OneCare’s Regional Operational Services Manager Fiona Hill said the competition was designed to foster understanding and respect across generations.
“While having their portrait done will be very special for residents, the ultimate goal of our art competition is to create new connections,” she said.
“To truly capture their subject, the artists will need to spend time with a resident. They’ll really get to know each other.
“So many older people have lived rich, varied lives and have so much to share with younger generations. They in turn love getting to know young people who are growing up in a very different world. This is a way of bringing the community in and facilitating connections that wouldn’t otherwise happen – and everyone benefits.”
There are categories for students in years 9-10, 11-12, and an open age group, with cash prizes for first, second and third place.
“We’ve been coordinating with local schools and community art groups to raise awareness and invite anyone who is interested to contact Umina Park to get involved,” said Ms Hill.
The competition will be judged by Burnie Mayor Teeny Brumby, local artist and former Umina Park staffer Mark O’Brien and Chief Operations Officer Natalie Neilson. Member for Braddon, Premier Jeremy Rockliff is helping the Tasmanian not-for-profit aged care provider run the event, providing $1000 in sponsorship.
Artists have until October 5th to complete the portraits, before they go on display at Burnie Library for Seniors Month. To get involved, contact Tara Kuys at uminapark@onecare.org.au.
